What Does a Pre-Purchase Inspection Check on a Used Car?
A pre-purchase inspection checks the engine, transmission, brakes, suspension, tires, fluids, electronics, stored trouble codes and signs of accident or flood damage before you buy.
What is a pre-purchase inspection?
A pre-purchase inspection (PPI) is an independent mechanic's check of a used car's condition before you buy it. It identifies existing problems and upcoming repairs so you can negotiate or walk away.
What does a pre-purchase inspection include?
Our inspection covers: - Engine: leaks, noises, belts, hoses, mounts - Transmission: shift quality, fluid condition - Brakes: pad and rotor wear, fluid - Suspension and steering: shocks, struts, bushings, alignment wear - Tires: tread depth, age, uneven wear - Electrical: battery, charging system, lights, accessories - Computer scan: stored and pending trouble codes, readiness monitors - Body and frame: accident repair, rust, flood damage signs - Road test
Why check readiness monitors on a used car?
Unset readiness monitors can mean the battery was disconnected or codes were cleared recently to hide a problem. California smog checks also require these monitors to be set.
Is a vehicle history report enough?
No. A history report lists reported events; it cannot show current mechanical condition or unreported accident repairs. Use both.
When should I schedule the inspection?
Schedule it after you have agreed on a price in principle but before you pay or sign. Make the sale conditional on the inspection.

Dealer vs. Independent Auto Shop: Which Costs Less in Los Angeles?
An independent shop usually costs less than a dealership for the same repair, mainly because of lower labor rates and the option of quality aftermarket parts.
Will Using an Independent Repair Shop Void My Car's Warranty?
No. Federal law (the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act) protects your right to have routine maintenance done at any qualified shop without voiding your factory warranty.
