Will Using an Independent Repair Shop Void My Car's Warranty?

June 8, 2026 3 min readBy Playa Vista Automotive

No. Federal law (the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act) protects your right to have routine maintenance done at any qualified shop without voiding your factory warranty.

Does an independent shop void my new-car warranty?

No. Under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a manufacturer cannot void your warranty just because maintenance was done outside the dealership.

What do I need to keep my warranty valid?

Follow the maintenance schedule in your owner's manual, use fluids and parts that meet the manufacturer's specifications, and keep every receipt. Records showing date, mileage and work performed are your proof.

Can a manufacturer deny a warranty claim?

Only if it can show that a specific part or repair caused the failure. A denial cannot be based simply on where the service was done.

Which repairs should still go to the dealer?

Go to the dealer for repairs covered by the warranty itself and for safety recalls, because the manufacturer pays for them there.
