You still have brakes — and they can rust from disuse
EV regenerative braking barely touches the friction brakes, so pads and rotors go unused for long periods. That means rust and seized calipers, especially in coastal humidity. Inspection every 12 months is essential.
Tires wear differently on EVs
EVs weigh 500–1,500 lbs more than comparable gas cars, and instant torque wears tires fast. Rotate every 5,000–7,500 miles and align at least once a year.
Cabin filter + coolant loop
Both EVs and hybrids have a coolant system for the battery pack. Coolant condition and level matter — Teslas, Bolts, and Leafs all specify service intervals. Cabin filters clog just like any other car.
12-volt battery: the silent EV killer
Every EV still has a 12V battery that runs the computers. When it dies, the car won't start — even with a full main pack. Load-test the 12V annually, especially in Teslas over 3 years old.
