Check Engine Light On? Here's What to Do Before You Panic
A steady check-engine light isn't an emergency — but a flashing one is. Here's how to tell the difference and what your car is trying to say.
Steady vs flashing
A steady light means the car's computer has stored a fault code — drive normally to a shop within a week. A flashing light means a serious misfire that can destroy the catalytic converter within minutes. Pull over and call us.
The #1 cause: a loose gas cap
It sounds silly, but a poorly sealed gas cap triggers an evaporative-emissions code and lights the CEL. Tighten it, drive for a day or two, and see if it clears.
Common codes we see in LA
P0420 (catalytic efficiency low), P0300 (random misfire), P0171 (fuel system lean), P0442 (small EVAP leak). Each has a different fix — never just clear the code and hope. A proper diagnosis saves money.
Why cheap 'code readers' can mislead you
A parts-store scanner shows the code, but the code doesn't tell you the failed part. P0300 could be spark plugs, coils, injectors, compression, or a vacuum leak. Our shop uses OEM-level scan tools plus live data to pinpoint the actual cause.
